Where your videos live

Capme hosts your recordings in Germany, or you keep them in your own bucket. What each one means for playback and deletion.

You choose this in the workspace admin under Data, in the Storage section. Every workspace starts on Capme video hosting. Only the workspace owner can change it.

Capme video hosting

Recordings are stored in Germany. Viewers get them from the delivery server closest to them. Capme converts each recording after the upload, so the player adjusts the quality to the viewer's connection and shows thumbnails when you scrub through a video.

On Capme hosting, recordings are deleted when their retention window ends, unless someone keeps them. Retention, keep and deletion explains how that works.

Your own bucket

With Business and Enterprise, and during the Business trial, the owner can connect an S3-compatible bucket of your own. New recordings then go straight from the browser into your bucket, and playback reads them from there. The video never passes through Capme.

A few things work differently:

  • There is no conversion. Viewers play the original file, so a long recording is a large download.
  • The player has no scrub thumbnails and no adaptive quality.
  • Capme sets no retention window. Your bucket's lifecycle rule decides how long files stay, and Capme deletes a file there only when someone deletes the recording in Capme.

Connect your own bucket walks through the setup.

Switching

A switch only affects recordings made after it. Every recording remembers where it was stored and keeps playing from there, so nothing is copied or moved. The Storage section tells you how many videos stay on Capme hosting.

You can go back to Capme hosting at any time. The bucket settings stay saved, so the videos already in your bucket keep playing. Older recordings on Capme hosting still follow their retention window after you switch to a bucket.
